My fundamental compositional concepts for them date back to 1972 or even earlier. They relate to my 1950s and 1960s childhood experiences of living in the Sherwood Forest area, and to ideas about ancient monumental standing stones explored beginning around 1971-72 when I was a DipAD Fine Art undergraduate student at Loughborough College of Art 1971-74. Compositions were abstracted to vertical forms with light and space, created on the picture plane horizontally and vertically, further developed 1973 and afterwards. I developed ideas about the Sublime in both American Abstract Expressionism - with ideas connecting to the American art critics Clement Greeberg and Harold Rosenberg - and to the landscape of my native Britain and historically to English Romantic Art. The concepts continue throughout the decades, undergoing developments. y Mthesis was on the New York School of Abstract Expressionism, which is also referenced in my 2001 Royal College of Art MPhil research dissertation. In 2009 I posted a set of paintings on my first art website in the basic style of the blue backround one above, right side, which I deliberately based on a particular painting I made in 1973, which is recorded on another archive 35mm slide transparency in my collection.
