History of art interests include ideas about the Sublime in American Abstract Painting and English Romantic Art.​ His first exhibition was in 1965 as 1st Prize Winner in a national junior painting competition, at the Tate Gallery, London, Manchester Whitworth Art Gallery and Glasgow Museum & Art Gallery. He also exhibited at the nationally prestigious Northern Young Contemporaries, Manchester. Travel includes an epic 10,000 mile US road trip through the vast western landscape, which​ inspired later works, and crossing the Alberta Prairies to paint in the Canadian Rocky Mountains. ​​​
