Some key information about my MFA in Painting from Newcastle University 1978-80, because of its connection to the classic terminal American MFA and high status in the American art world, and to Newcastle University's historically important central part in global art education, as discussed in a 2019 Royal Academy of Arts published article written by the art critic and curator Sam Thorne on "Eight art schools that changed the world," with Newcastle University historically being one of those elite institutions along with the Bauhaus and Black Mountain College.

Information, by David Poyser:

I received an MFA in Painting from Newcastle University 1978-80 - two years full time studio practice with an art history dissertation and graduation exhibition at the Hatton Gallery.

This was at that time the terminal highest level studio art degree of what is acknowledged as a golden era in boundary-pushing art education (not to be confused with the modern iteration restructured lower level status). In my time it was a rare qualification introduced to the historic Newcastle University Department of Fine Art in the 1970s by Professor Kenneth Rowntree (who was my MFA tutor) as an equivalent to the American MFA to highlight Newcastle as an elite avant-garde international art department on the world stage. In America, the Newcastle MFA of that period was embraced as the highest-level "gold standard." The Newcastle University MFA in the 1970s cemented its reputation as a powerhouse that bridged fine art with educational theory, and I am part of that history. The photograph and detail above shows me in my studio at Newcastle University, dated early 1979.

In 2019, the Royal Academy of Arts in London published an article written by art critic and curator Sam Thorne, entitled "Eight art schools that changed the world."

The article highlights eight revolutionary institutions that completely transformed how art is taught, practiced, and understood globally.

It opens with the statement "From the influential Bauhaus to contemporary Cuba, centres for studying art have shaped global culture over the past century. Sam Thorne celebrates the most innovative examples."

The article goes on to list and describe eight global institutions. Newcastle University is listed in that article, describing its avant-garde roots in the 1950s and 1960s, which continued into the 1970s when I was am MFA postgraduate. At the top of the list is the legendary Bauhaus. Also included are Black Mountain College, North Carolina, and CalArts, Los Angeles, from the USA. My fine art department at Newcastle University is the one and only British institution on the list, and is at the highest level of international standing of that time in history.

The article published by the Royal Academy of Arts instantly provides visitors, collectors, and curators with context on just how influential my alma mater Newcastle University was at that earlier time in history.
